Elon Musk’s Boring Company on Friday completed the first of the planned Las Vegas tunnel for vehicular traffic. The completion of the tunnels beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center campus marks the completion of a major milestone.
The Boring Company managed to drill the tunnel in record time ever since the companies event in Las Vegas on November 15, 2019. The company broke through the target destination, a concrete wall on the West Hall convention.
This marks the completion of the first half of the transport system that will shuttle attendees across the sprawling Las Vegas Convention campus in just over one minute, free of charge, in all-electric Tesla vehicles.
Tesla intends to complete the project in time for the next year’s 2021 CES technology show.
The Boring Company will disassemble the TBM from the west end of the West Hall and move to the east end of the East Hall once the first tunnel is complete. On completion of this task, the second tunnel of the LVCC Loop’s transport line will also be completed
Later The Boring Company will start work on fitting the tunnels to support its transport pods that will ferry passengers from one end of the LVCC to another.
The Boring Company has till now only managed to complete proof of concept tunnel in Hawthrone, CA. Here they used Tesla Model X SUVs to ferry passengers from one end to the other of the tunnel. The Las Vegas transport tunnels will be the first major mainstream project under its belt.
We will get to see another type of vehicle used to transport passengers at the Las Vegas tunnel system. Reports suggest autonomous vehicles that can accommodate around 16 people will be used.
Richard N. Velotta, a journalist in a press statement said, “What I find most interesting is that those who are opposed are extremely opposed. Those who support are extremely supportive. No middle-of-the-road here.”
Mayor Carolyn Goodman, a strong critic of The Boring Company said, its technology is largely untested, and therefore risky. Though The Boring Company as per its project contract will be liable if the system does not operate as intended. Apart from this the project also has a large number of supporters in its favor.
Velotta added, “There are huge supporters, both of the Boring system and Mr. Musk. They point out that Las Vegas, as a gambling city, has always taken big risks to capitalize on big rewards. This project is just such an instance.”
