When you think about a modern city the first thing that shows up in your mind are Skyscrapers, high-rise apartments, neon signs, and congested roads. That’s how a modern city would look, isn’t it? Yet we see a widespread problem related to air pollution, traffic jams, waste disposal and homelessness in various cities around the world like London, Tokyo, New York or Mexico City. All this is going to change as far as the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh is concerned. The Andhra Pradesh government has enlisted Norman Foster to help redesign the capital city for the province, Amravati. Amravati will be the first high tech sustainable city in India.
The city will be planned along with Singapore based urban consultants Surbana Jurong. Surbana Jurong is known to create jobs and homes for all, a world-class infrastructure, a green city, and efficient resource management.
The Project will cover the entire area of 217 sq km of the city which includes the Legislature Assembly and the High Court Complex. The design will incorporate the latest technologies being developed in India along with the knowledge of creating sustainable cities. The project plans to include shaded walkways which will allow people to walk through the city and creation of green spaces. Use of Solar Energy, Electric public transport system, water taxis, and dedicated cycle routes are also included in the plan which will be realized within 25 years.
This plan can set an example to address the challenges faced by other cities around the world and discussed by the World Economic Forum Council on Cities and Urbanization. By 2050 nearly 70% of the world population will be living in the cities and this can become more important as the planet becomes increasingly urban.
The Forum in a separate paper has also assessed how the state of Andhra Pradesh could benefit from harnessing new technologies. Also made a concluding remark saying by 2022 there could be a $5 billion opportunity annually.
