WhatsApp has collaborated with Invest India to launch “Startup India- WhatsApp Grand Challenge”. This will enable to fuel the growth of India’s Entrepreneurial and small business community. Prize worth $250000 (approx Rs 1.8 crore) will be given away to top 5 winners.
The startup challenge will feature a number of themes like healthcare, rural economy, financial and digital inclusion, education and citizen safety.
WhatsApp in a media release said – “Entrepreneurs with highly innovative ideas, business models that solve for a local India problem, making a large scale socio-economic impact, are invited to apply.”
The last date for applying for the challenge is March 10, 2019. The participant’s application will initially be evaluated by an individual evaluation committee. After this, the best 30 ideas will be shortlisted to proceed to the next round. Later another 10 will be shortlisted in the following round. These 10 ideas will be invited to participate at the live pitch day during the grand finale.
5 winner will be decided on May 24, 2019, and each will receive a grant of $50000 as a prize.
The announcement of a partnership between WhatsApp and Invest India was made earlier on October 31, 2018, in the presence of Suresh Prabhu, Commerce & Industries Minister, Ramesh Abhishek, Secretary, Industrial Policy and Promotion and Chris Daniels, Vice President, WhatsApp.
Speaking at the occasion Minister Suresh Prabhu said – “WhatsApp is a startup that has grown into a community and is an example of how an idea can grow to become an integral part of our day to day life [and]… that the Startup community is the future of India and will be the platform through which the millions of youth of this country will be gainfully employed.”
WhatsApp is a popular messaging app with 1.3 billion global users and over 200 million Indian users. It has been closely working on its business platforms – the WhatsApp Business app and WhatsApp Business API, launched in 2018.
With the launch of this app, WhatsApp tried to showcase how it will offer ease of doing business solution for small, medium or large enterprises by connecting with customers. At present there are over 5 million businesses are now on WhatsApp.
