The Indian government is concerned about the use of WhatsApp, as it is being used to spread viral Fake News and is not able to trace the origin of these messages. As a result of this WhatsApp can be banned in India. Earlier there have been incidents where fake news was spread over WhatsApp leading to violence. There has been a debate going on between the Indian Government and WhatsApp since the month of August over this issue.
The Indian government wants WhatsApp to develop a technology to trace the origin of any message. WhatsApp in response to the Government’s demands said it will not be able to develop such a technology as it will break the end to end encryption policy which secures the data privacy.
The recent media reports suggest the government has sent the 3rd letter to WhatsApp ordering them to create a tracking technology. It seems likely WhatsApp will have to face stern action against them if they fail to develop such a technology. This can also lead to a complete ban on WhatsApp in India.
On the condition of anonymity, one of the government official said, the demands of the government are reasonable can be implemented. He further said the third letter will remind WhatsApp, it is not meeting all the concerns.
Will WhatsApp Develop Such A Technology?
As far as the technology is concerned, it is possible to track the origin of the messages according to some security and data experts
According to Sunil Abraham, Executive Director of Center of Internet and Security – WhatsApp does not require to store all the messages, instead, a creation of meta-data can track the date, time, location and account name of the person who created any message.
An unknown government official said WhatsApp has a setup massive data centers which store tons of data in the form of billions of messages, of these we want them to track and trace only those mischievous messages which trigger mass-panic
There have been incidents in the recent past where viral fake news and fake messages have been circulated via WhatsApp. Leading to people getting killed as such information disturbs the atmosphere in the society we live in.
IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has also reacted earlier where he said – “WhatsApp needs to find solutions to deal with sinister developments like mob lynching and revenge porn and has to follow Indian law.”
WhatsApp Being Held Responsible For Mob Lynching
With the rise in the number of incidents resulting due to fake news and messages sent over WhatsApp, a leading media portal has demanded WhatsApp should be held responsible for mob lynching, and mass killing of people in India.
Though there is no solid evidence to prove this point as to why only WhatsApp needs to be blamed. As WhatsApp is a just a platform where the messages are shared. Yet WhatsApp has reacted to this by taking stringent steps to curb the nuisance caused due to the spread of fake news and fake stories.
Under the new conditions, WhatsApp users in India can no longer forward more than 5 chats to their friend. Also, all forwarded messages are labelled and there is a spam detection tool present in the App. A cash prize of thousands of dollars is declared for anyone who can find a solution to stop the menace of fake news.
There is a lot of concern and discussion going on but we are still waiting to find a solution to this nuisance. Do you think WhatsApp should be banned in India by our government? Do write about your views and suggestion to stop the impact of fake news and fake messages.
