Latest Technology News: Recently WhatsApp Accounts Hacked has run into trouble over the fake news issue in India. Which has resulted in the Indian government wanting WhatsApp to take the responsibility and curb the fake news issues. WhatsApp has responded to this by implementing a number of features to tackle the problem. Apart from this now there are reports of many WhatsApp accounts hacked using voicemail, leading to the Israel National Cyber Security Authority, Israel has issued a nationwide security alert on Tuesday, reported ZDNet.
According to ZDNet the alert issued suggests, the modus operandi is a bit new and the hackers use mobile providers voicemail systems to hijack users WhatsApp accounts.
Who Is At Risk of Getting WhatsApp Hacked?
Users having voicemail accounts for their phone numbers are generally at risk of getting their WhatsApp Hijacked. They will need to change the accounts default password as in most cases it is either 0000 or 1234.
How Does it Happen?
Generally, the account is taken over when an attacker tries to add a legitimate number to a new WhatsApp installation on his own phone. After going through a number of standard security procedures, the one-time code is sent by WhatsApp via SMS on that phone number. This will alert the users of the possible hijacking of their accounts.
But the hackers have found a way out to avoid this by carrying out the attack at night or when they are aware that the user is not near his phone.
This hack is purely based on perfect timing as after several failed attempts to validate the one time code sent via SMS, WhatsApp will prompt the user to perform a “Voice Verification”. The user will receive a call from WhatsApp and speak out the one-time verification code loud.

If the everything goes according to planned and the victim does not answer his phone, the message will land up in his or her voicemail account.
After this is all easy as most mobile telecom providers allow remote access to their voicemail accounts. The hacker has to simply enter the correct PIN and get access to the one time password. Once they gain access to the victims WhatsApp by inserting this one time password, which links to the user’s phone number and gains control to the WhatsApp account from the legitimate owner.
Once the hacker gains access to the WhatsApp account, they can simply enable the two-step verification, after this the legitimate owner can lose control of his/her WhatsApp account forever, as they cannot regain control of it without a six-digit number only the attacker knows.
WhatsApp Accounts Hacked! How To Protect Yourself?
The technique used does not need technical skills or equipment to execute. It is purely based on timing and chances. You still need to be careful and vigilant about it. You can protect yourself from such an attack by either setting up a strong password for your mobile voicemail account or enabling a two-step verification for the WhatsApp account. This will keep the hackers at bay.
Who Else Needs To Be Vigilant?
The present threat is related to WhatsApp accounts hacked, yet we must not forget it could happen with any other social media platform. Especially with researcher Martin Vigo a few months ago pointing out flaws in the security can be used to gain access to popular social media platforms like Facebook, Google, Twitter, WordPress, eBay, or PayPal profiles.
