South Africa came out guns blazing in the one-off T20 International in Queensland against Australia by the end of the tour. The match was rain interrupted and had to be cut down to 10 overs per side which proved to be a treat for the spectators present at the Carrara Oval. Though the match sparked off a controversy as South African Andile Phehlukwayo was spotted wearing the Apple watch. According to the ICC playing regulations a player is not allowed to wear an Apple watch during the match.
Earlier the ICC officials had intervened and disallowed the Pakistan players from wearing the Apple Watch during the first Test between Pakistan and England. The official at the match venue requested the players to remove the watches before taking the field on the second day of the Test. That incident also had sparked off a controversy as these devices can potentially be used to communicate the dressing room information outside. This is against the rules laid by the ICC governing body.
Phehlukwayo on the other was wearing the Apple Watch during the T20 international match and the same is now being questioned.
ICC Playing Regulations
ICC playing regulations suggest the players and officials are supposed to hand over their smartphones to the anti-corruption officials before the start of play. The player gets back their smartphones after the end of the days play or end of the match depending on the format of the match(One-Day or T20).
Apple watch can also be used to communicate similar information from the dressing room outside, as it comes with multiple features that enable it to share info. It is possible that Andile Phehlukwayo might have disabled this feature on his watch before taking on the field of play.
There was no clarification made on the matter as there is a confusion. But surely looks ICC will take suitable steps to further tighten the loopholes and include banning players from wearing the Apple Watch on the field of play.
