Tumblr has decided to permanently ban adult content from its platform on December 17. This means it will no longer allow porn related communities on its platform and will alter how the service is being used fundamentally. Tumblr has a new policy in place just after Tumblr was removed from Apple’s iOS store after being reported for a child pornography incident. Under the ban, Tumblr will remove explicit sexual content and nudity with a few exceptions as suggested on its blog post on Monday.
Under the new guidelines photos, videos, and GIFs of human genitalia, female-presenting nipples, and any media involving sex acts, including illustrations will be banned. Whereas nude classical statues and political protests that feature nudity will remain. The ban also excludes text content, so erotica remains permitted. Illustrations and art that feature nudity will be permitted as long as sex acts aren’t depicted. Similarly breastfeeding and after-birth photos will also be allowed.
Users Can Appeal For Flagged Content
All of the explicit posts will be flagged and deleted from the platform after December 17. Tumblr has posted emails to all users having adult content flagged by the algorithms. They have been notified that their content will be hidden from view. All these posts will be marked as private, preventing users from being able to re-post and share them elsewhere on Tumblr.
Though the users do have a chance to appeal for flagged content if they think it was a mistake. Tumblr does admit there is a chance for errors with the automated tools used. It will be a time-consuming process as Tumble has tons of posts featuring explicit content. Users who run adult content blogs do have the chance to move their content from Tumblr before the December 17 deadline and save what they have.
Though Tumblr will not be entirely banning Explicit blogs they will be heavily censored for all visitors. Read Tumblr’s FAQ.
Blogs that have been self-flagged or flagged as explicit before December 17 or according to the old policy will still remain flagged. They can choose to post content within the rules of Tumblr in the future. Individuals under the age of 18 will continue to be restricted from viewing contents of these blogs. All avatars and headers for these blogs have been set to default and all posts from these blogs is kept out from the search results.
Tumblr has taken up to the task of cleaning its platform more seriously this time. It has announced the new community guidelines that banned revenge porn, hate speech, and posts that glorified school shootings back in August.
According to D’Onofrio said the user doesn’t need to mourn over the loss of adult content as they have many other options. Tumblr will leave them and focus on efforts to create a welcoming environment for our community. But this is sure got many people angry who have been using Tumblr to enjoy, share, and discuss their preferred flavor of porn and adult content.
