After the massive political data leak revealed personal information of many leading politicians in Germany a few days ago. A 20-year-old boy has been arrested and taken into police custody for further interrogation.
Reports suggest the man in Hesse, central state of Germany, has been arrested today on suspicion of spying and the unauthorized disclosure of personal data.
The hacker managed to hack and publish personal data of Chancellor Angela Merkel and many other German politicians, celebrities and journalists. Politicians ho belonged to the right-wing Alternative for Germany party were spared of this attack.
According to the German investigative police force(BKA) said they searched the suspect’s apartments on Sunday after which he was arrested. The 19-year-old man from Heilbronn town
North of Stuttgart who is linked with the suspected hacker is also being interrogated.
At the press conference on Tuesday, unconfirmed media reports also suggested the suspect has confessed his crime.
Biggest Data Leak In Germany Till Date
The data compromised by the hackers included personal phone numbers and addresses, internal party documents and credit card details. All these details were published via a Twitter account. It is already being considered to be one of the biggest data leaks in Germany to date.
Horst Seehofer, Interior minister promised to provide clarity and get information from the heads of the country’s criminal police office (BKA) and cyber defense agency (BSI) what they knew about the cyber attack and how they dealt with it.
Twitter handle #-Orbit was used to publish the documents back in December. They were published in the form of the arrival of a calendar with one post each day. These post went unnoticed until the first week of January when it was discovered, the account managed to add around 18,000 followers.
According to a local Newspaper Bild the leaks contained data related to 405 politicians from Merkel’s CDU-CSU alliance, 294 from the SPD social democrats, 105 from the Greens, 82 Left party members, and 28 FDP MPs.
