Space X founder Elon Musk posted a photo of futuristic looking white spacesuits on Wednesday morning. The suits will be used by the astronauts flying aboard the Space X Dragon spacecraft.
He has stated in his Instagram message as we can see above that the suit has been tested to double the vacuum pressure. He also said it was extremely difficult to balance the aesthetics and functions of the suit and would have been easier had it been done separately. The term double vacuum pressure means that the suit would have been inflated to twice the pressure of sea level and then put into a vacuum chamber.
The suit is all white in contrast to the very blue space suits to be introduced by Boeing in January. There has been no other technical information disclosed by Elon Musk about the suit.
Broadly speaking the suits are not space suits instead they are flight suits designed to be worn on the flight to space and back to the Earth. Unlike spacesuits, they will not be using it for spacewalks and will have limited time in which they can operate in a full vacuum.
There has been a healthy rivalry between Boeing and SpaceX, related to designing, development and fly spacecraft capable of transporting astronauts to the International Space Station. Both are confident of completing the project on schedule with carrying out crew test flights in 2018. Though both seem to have missed their timelines earlier and looks more likely to do so yet again they are on the right track.
Both companies are strong contenders and though Boeing has revealed its spacesuit earlier than SpaceX it seems unclear who will get to the launch pad first.
