The Pirate Bay the world’s popular torrent download website has found itself yet another controversy. This time it has been accused of secretly planting an in-browser cryptocurrency miner on its website that utilizes its visitors’ CPU processing power in order to mine digital currencies.
Pirate Bay has been popular amongst users intending to download copyrighted material free of charge. At time it has also been in news over copyright infringement by movie studios, music producers and software creators.
In a latest discovery made, Pirate Bay has been caught generating revenue without the knowledge of its millions of visitors. Pirate Bay would secretly utilize the CPU power of these users to mine a Bitcoin alternative called Monero.
This incident was reported for the first time by TorrentFreak, responding to it Pirate Bay released a statement on its website. Pirate Bay accepted the fact that the cryptocurrency miner was used, but said it was used only for 24 hours and was being tested to be used as an alternative to generate revenue via ads. This would allow them to remove the annoying ads on the torrent website altogether.
