State-owned telecom operator BSNL will soon be introducing low cost smartphone similar to the recently introduced Rs1500 by Reliance Jio. Though this phone will be priced around Rs2500 which is slightly higher than Reliance Jio. The budget smartphones will be manufactured in partnership with Lava and Micromax along with some bundled offers.
Speaking to reported in Hyderabad, BSNL Hyderabad Telecom District (HTD) Principal General Manager K Ramchand said – “BSNL has tied up with Micromax and Lava to provide instruments to BSNL customers at low cost. We are coming out with bundled offers on the handsets manufactured by Micromax and Lava with BSNL SIM…the cost details are being worked out,”
He further said that though the price of the smartphone is not yet decided, it will be affordable and will try to keep it below Rs 2500. BSNL has commissioned 6 rural exchanges with Wi-Fi in Hyderabad Hyderabad Telecom District while the other 112 rural exchanges are in pipeline and will be covered by the end of this year.
Currently, there has been an influx of many low-cost mobile phones soon after the launch of JioPhone. Airtel is close on its heels of JioPhone, has announced its plans to bring a 4G feature phone that would cost around Rs 2500. There are reports that the company may launch the phone around Diwali . Similar to JioPhone it will also be launched bundled with data and voice benefits. Airtel has no contribution in the phones manufacturing finances and the user will only be able to download apps from the Google Play Store.
Other players like Idea and Vodafone are likely to launch a low cost smartphone in India around Rs 2500. These phones would come with dual SIM and options to choose between 2G and 3G.
