Apple Acquired Companies In 2018
This year Apple has been able to be amongst the leaders when it comes to the market valuation of the company. Though it has not been able to beat Microsoft it has continued to remain competitive in terms of the market value. Overall as a company, Apple will be the first company to have a look at. As we enter the last week of the year 2018 we present you with the list of companies Apple has acquired along with their company information.
Apple purchased Buddybuild an application development company back in January this year. Based in Vancouver, Buddybuild focuses on deployment and integration tools for iOS development, which serves as a user feedback platform. After the deal was closed Buddybuild collaborated with the Xcode engineering group at Apple to build developer tools for the entire iOS community. Apple acquired the company with a goal to support Apple’s Xcode development platform.
Shortly after acquiring Buddybuild, Apple moved on to acquire a team of data experts from, Silicon Valley Data Science. Silicon Valley Data Science focuses on providing larger companies with data analysis to improve forecasts, operational activities and customer relationships. Apple has not purchased Silicon Valley Data Science outright, yet it recruits teams from the company. Personals hired by Apple from Silicon Valley Data Science are given the responsibility to analytics for various advertising initiatives at the company.
As we entered the month of March, Apple confirmed the purchase of digital magazine distributor Texture. Eddy Cue on behalf of Apple commented back then – Apple has allowed it to do quality journalism from reliable sources with Texture and that magazines continue to produce beautifully designed and engaging stories for users.
Apple will now launch a new journalism application that focuses on Texture by early March 2019.
In August Reuters reported Apple purchased an initiative that focused on making lenses for augmented reality glasses known as Akonia Holographics. Akonia Holographics is a company founded in 2012 and hold 200 patents for technologies and exhibitions for augmented reality glasses.
Apple collected around $11.6 million for the fund but it is not clear how much of it was actually paid to Akonia Holographics. Apple may have plans to work on augmented reality glasses or some kind of headset.

An announcement to acquire Shazam was already made last year end by Apple. The deal was not able to close due to regulatory concerns in Europe. Finally this year it was agreed to close the deal for $400 million, offering Shazam ads free to all users. We don’t know if Apple will integrate Shazam on iOS and Apple Music but stay connected we will keep you informed as we learn more.
Spektral is yet another acquisition Apple has been working on since December 2017, finally, it worked out in October 2018. Spektral is a Danish company which specializes in software to digitally manipulate people and objects. The was worth around $ 30 million, but this news is not confirmed by Apple. Apple has several reasons to acquire Spektral as its technology can be applied to the iOS camera application. Further, it can also be used for clips, applications such as Final Cut Pro and iMovie that bring advanced features to Apple’s applications.
Apple acquired Dialog a semiconductor company in October. Dialog has been a supplier to Apple for a long time. Apple and Dialog have entered a long-term agreement where Apple will pay $300 million in advance as part of the deal and will pay a $ 300 million purchase contract for the next three year. Apple will also hire 300 Dialog employees as a part of the deal. The deal will be finalized by the end of the first half of 2019.
Apple acquired a music analytics company Asaii in October this year. Asaii offers a unique platform where future hit artists can define ten weeks before the chart. Tough later reports suggest Apple did not purchase the company, instead it hired its founders. It is still early to know if the Asaii founders will be working something similar with Apple Music. Already Apple has a similar platform called Apple Music for Artists.
As we entered November 2018, Apple purchased Silk Labs, which focuses on software that is light enough to fit in consumer hardware like a camera.
The deal will be completed early this new year. Three former Mozilla employees came together to form Silk Labs back in 2015. The company specializes in creating a light artificial intelligence that protects the privacy of users. Apple, on the other hand, is a supports the use of artificial intelligence to give priority to privacy.
Platoon founded by Denzyl Feigelson in 2016, ironically he has been working with Apple for more than 15 years. Apple will purchase his company this year and might be to focus on the purchase of Asaii.
From the various purchases and acquisitions in the year 2018, we can see that Apple is interested in data, analytics, and artificial intelligence. Let’s wait and watch what we get to see from Apple in the months to come.
